Water being the Elixer of life is becoming less available day by day. It is estimated that by 2025 half of the world population would be vulnerable to Water borne diseases because of water scarcity. Currently approximately 70% of fresh water is consumed by agriculture and rest 30 % is being utilized for normal use. These satistics give a gloomy look for the Water Availability for the Industry.
Water in morden day can be clearly classified into following:
1) Hard Water - high amount of Calcium and Magnesium, affects pipes and fixtures.
2) Soft Water - Low in Calcium and magnesium and used for general purpose
3) Effluent Water - Water water from industries
4) Sewage Water
5) Rain Water
6) Potable Water - Suitable for drinking
7) SEA Water
Many Technologies are available to handle any of above types of water to make it potable for general consumption.
1) Characteristics of Drinking Water:
Should have the necessary minerals as per the WHO standard.
Should NOT have any Bacteria's like Cryptosporidium, giardia, E-coli.
Should not have huge amount of Salts like Sodium / Calcium / Magnesium.
TDS - Total Dissolved solids to be less than 100 ideal (200 good enough).
2) Characteristics of Bathing Water / General purpose except drinking :
Should not be very hard (Calicum or magnesium)- not more than 500 tds
Should not have high Chlorine - not more than 2ppm of residual chlorine
Should not have hazadous chemicals.
3) Charactersitics of Effluent Water:
Effluent water which is normally disposed off to the environment should be treated for its hazardous chemicals. The effluent should use Government Water disposal standards.
